Working-Man Outlaw Country

Cole Haloway

When the Well Runs Dry
I had my boots off by the front door.
0:000:00

I had my boots off by the front door.

I had my plate warm on the stove.

Ten hours in the gravel pit

Will take whatever skin you own.

The phone rang on the kitchen wall,

My brother's truck was in the ditch

Three miles out on County Nine,

Transmission slipped, the tie-rod bit.

I didn't sigh, I didn't cuss.

I pulled my wool socks back on tight.

She watched me from the kitchen sink;

I told her, "I'll be back tonight."

Everybody calls when the truck won't start.

Everybody calls when the well runs dry.

They know I've got a chain and a three-ton jack,

And I don't ask no questions why.

I'll pull you out the mud, I'll pay the extra bill,

I'll hold the ladder while you climb.

They ask me for a favor, ask me for my time—

Nobody asks if I'm tired.

No, nobody asks if I'm tired.

The rain was turning into sleet

Before I got the tow-chain hooked.

He stood there smoking in his coat,

Ashamed to give a straight-up look.

I laid my back down in the slush,

Bolted that shackle to the frame.

My fingers were too numb to bleed;

He started passing off the blame.

I said, "Just put it into gear,

Don't spin the tires and don't look back."

I dragged him up onto the road,

Then packed my grease-gun in the sack.

'Cause everybody calls when the truck won't start.

I stopped at the pump at four in the morning

Just to hold a hot paper cup.

I looked in the mirror above the sink,

Wondered when I got this beat-up.

I wouldn't trade being the one they lean on

For all of the sleep in the world,

It just gets cold being the iron

That never bends and never yields.

When everybody calls 'cause the truck won't start,

When everybody calls 'cause the well ran dry.

They know I've got two hands that don't know how to quit,

Even when the light leaves the sky.

I'll pull you out the ditch, I'll carry what I can,

I'll stand between you and the wire.

Go on and ask for a favor, ask me for my time—

Nobody asks if I'm tired.

Nobody asks if I'm tired.

Just don't ask if I'm tired.
